Lyhyesti kertoen Savonarola toimi Paavin kirkon sisällä, mutta ei hyväksynyt kaikkea katolisen kirkon touhua.
Mikä tekee mahdolliseksi sen, että Savonarola olisi saattanut olla ihan oikein uskomassa. Mutta myöhempi sotiminen ylellisyystavaroita ja taidetta vastaan ei kerro Pyhän Hengen vaikutuksesta.

Tarkoitan tätä: "Helmikuussa 1497 Savonarola lähetti suuren joukon nuoria kannattajiaan (jotka tunnettiin nimellä ”fanciulli”) kulkemaan läpi Firenzen ja takavarikoimaan kaiken, mikä voisi johtaa ihmisiä syntiin ja turmelukseen. Näihin turmelusta tuottaviin esineisiin ei laskettu vain ”pakanallisia” kirjoituksia (tai sellaisia, joita Savonarola piti pakanallisina) ja pornografisia kuvia, vaan myös ”ylellisyysesineitä” kuten maalauksia, hienoja huonekaluja, koruja, ylellisiä vaatteita, pelikortteja ja kosmetiikkaa. "

As it was, Savonarola was the precursor of the Protestant Reformation. By his terrific denunciation of the corruptions of the Roman Catholic Church, he prepared all Europe for the Reformation. His life and teachings had a great influence upon Luther, who acknowledged his indebtedness to him, and spoke of him as "a Protestant martyr."

Luther piti häntä ilmeisesti protestanttisena marttyyrinä. En tosin ole vielä löytänyt Lutherin suomenkielisistä teksteistä hänestä mainintaa.

And though Luther escaped his own death sentence, he found a particular resonance with Savonarola; two years after hiding away in Wartburg Castle, Luther published Savonarola’s prison meditations on Psalms 51 and 31 and praised him as “that godly man of Florence.”

Mielenkiintoisen oloinen kaveri toden totta. En osaa sanoa juuta enkä jaata siihen, oliko Savonarola elävässä uskossa, mutta mukavahan näitä on pohdiskella. Jos keskustelua sopii laajentaa muihinkin entisajan hengenmiehiin, niin mitä mieltä muut palstalaiset ovat "esiprotestanttisen" liikkeen johtohahmosta, Jan Hussista? Ymmärtääkseni Luther piti häntä arvossa, mutta oliko hän elävästi uskomassa? En ole löytänyt mitään suomenkielistä selvitystä hänen teologiastaan ja englanninkielentaitoni ei taivu lukemaan uskonnollista tekstiä (englanniksi tietoa löytyisi varmasti).

Tulee mieleen Juhana Hussin sanat roviolla: "Minut te paistatte kuin hanhen, mutta sadan vuoden kuluttua tulee hän, jota te ette tapa".

Jonkin lähteen mukaan Luther itsekin oli sitä mieltä, että Hus tarkoitti noilla sanoilla juuri häntä.

Kun Luther tutustui Husin opetuksiin, hän oli sanonut, että mehän olemme kaikki 'Hussilaisia'.

Jos Luther piti Hussia uskovaisena, voinemme mekin niin tehdä. Luther kun oli omistanut elämänsä uskonasioiden tutkimiseen ja niistä puhumiseen, niin hänen mielipiteensä seisovat yleisesti ottaen melko lujalla perustuksella.

Löysin Wikipediaa selatessani toisenkin kiinnostavan hengenmiehen:John Wycliffen, Jan Hussin teologiaan syvästi vaikuttaneen englantilaisen uskonpuhdistajan. Wikipedia tietää kertoa seuraavaa:
"Wycliffe kyseenalaisti paavin vallan kirkossa. Hän vastusti pyhimysten kunnioitusta ja pappien selibaattia. Hän korosti Raamatun ja sen lukemisen merkitystä kirkollisena auktoriteettina, mutta on epäselvää, kuinka paljon Raamatun käännöstyötä hän teki itse. Wycliffen mielestä katolinen kirkko oli ajautunut kauas perustehtävästään ja alkanut vaatia ihmisiä noudattamaan tapoja, joista ei puhuttu Raamatussa. Hän piti rippiä, aneita ja pyhien palvomista täysin turhina ja jopa haitallisina tapoina."
Puhtaalta ja hyvältä opetukseltahan tuo kuulostaa, vaikka asiaan pitäisi tietenkin perehtyä tarkemmin jotta voisi sanoa varman mielipiteen asiasta. Wycliffen ajatus siitä, että rippi on turha ja haitallinen tapa, tuntuu vähän kummalliselta, mutta ehkä hän tarkoitti sillä katolisen kirkon vääristynyttä rippikulttuuria eikä rippiä sinänsä.

Bernardine was preaching at Mantua,[1] and where, in order to get from the convent at which he was staying to the town where he was to preach, he had to cross over a sheet of water. On one occasion, we are told, being in a great hurry to begin his sermon, he begged the boatman to row him across for love. The latter, however, who suspected the friar of secretly carrying some money about him, demanded payment. In vain did Bernardine seek to convince him of his entire destitution, and to propitiate him by dwelling on the impatience which must be seizing his waiting audience ; the boatman once and for all refused to serve him gratis. Then the saint turning towards the friar who accompanied him, said to him, " Brother, have you entire trust in the Lord ? " "
Certainly," was the reply. " Will you imitate exactly what I am about to do ? " was the next query. "
Yes," said the friar. Whereupon, Bernardine, spreading out his mantle on the face of the waters and stepping thereon together with his companion, they both fell on their knees and, with eyes and hands raised supplicatingly towards heaven, gained the opposite shore so rapidly that, when they were already on dry land, the boat was still only midway across the lake. And those who beheld this wonderful scene from the skiff and from the shore, confounded at the sight, prayed aloud. " The account of this wonderful miracle," says one of the saint's biographers, "I have from the lips of an old priest who had struck up a great friendship with Bernardine in his youth and who, with his own eyes, had seen him walking on the water."

OD, of Himself, and through the instrumentality
of His saints, revealed to Vincent Ferrer his
own predestination, and the glory which would
surround his name in the Catholic Church. This was
not enough : He moreover willed that the Saint's own lips
should announce it to the people. On one occasion, there-
fore, when preaching at Alexandria in Piedmont, he thus
spoke to his auditory : '* My brethren, I have good news
to tell you : there is a young man among you who will
be the glory of the Seraphic Order and of Italy (he sig-
nified St. Bernardino of Siena). He will take my place
among you when I shall have returned to Spain. His
heavenly life and holy teaching will bear most abundant
fruits; he will become a great light in the Church,
which will honour him before it accords the same honour
to myself." The prophecies contained in these words were
literally fulfilled. Bernardino of Siena, having entered
the Order of St. Francis, preached in Italy, died in 1444,

Luther ei missään mainitse hänestä mitään. Vääjäämättä tulee mieleen, että oliko Vincent itse yksi antikristus.
